WHICH CAPPADOCIA HOT AIR BALLOON COMPANY IS YOUR FAVORITE?

How do you choose between the many Cappadocia hot air balloon companies?
Cappadocia hot air balloon companies

For most people the choice is made for them. Either their travel agent, hotel, or tour guide sets it up. However, a good percentage of travelers still decide for themselves, and you are probably one of them.

I have done some research and have not been able to find one place on the internet that lists all the different hot air balloon companies in Cappadocia. So, I decided to fix that. I personally visited and interviewed every company (just finished doing this again for the third time). I asked them the 11+ questions I recommended that you ask. Below I have given the answers.

The table contains a few key characteristics and below I have given fuller descriptions. Once you read through simply click on the name of the company, and you will be directed to their website.

11 QUESTIONS?

One way to make this fair was to ask each Cappadocia hot air balloon company the same questions. I printed out the questions and took them to each office. Everyone was happy to talk with me. Each company is clearly proud of what they do and very concerned about safety. Some of the questions were impossible to verify and each company gave the same answer. For example, everyone says they have insurance and use propane to fly their balloons. I have no reason to doubt them. Also, they all have varying degrees of flexibility as to where they can take off depending on the wind. And they all understand the importance of being able to navigate up and down, in and out of Cappadocia’s wonderful valleys.

The other questions I asked were the following:
* When did they open?
* How many slots do they have and what size baskets?[A]
* How many pilots and how much experience do they have as well as what languages do they speak?
* How long are the flights and what is the advertised price (some companies will negotiate if you call)?[B]
* Do they serve basic breakfast or open buffet and where do their guests wait before flying?[C]
* Are their guest transport vans branded?[D]
* What are their balloons made of?[E]
* With the answers to these questions you should be able to get a good picture of what a company offers as well as how it differs from its competitors.
* What this cannot capture is the personal touch that each company brings to the table. For that you will need to call and talk to someone or, even better, go by and meet the people at your company of choice. They will be happy to answer your questions and reserve a place for you on whichever day you are visiting.

One note regarding English speaking pilots:
Only one company was honest enough to admit that their pilots do not speak English. You will have to look below to find it. Some companies have excellent English speaking pilots, but many do not and many have maybe one or two pilots that speak English well while the others are low. Be sure to ask for a pilot that speaks English well if that is important to you.

Their baskets fit 20 but they take a maximum of 16 passengers. They are one of the few, if not the only, company that serves real champagne. 1. Basic Breakfast consists of coffee, tea, and some breakfast rolls. Some companies may have fruit or cereal or cookies also.
2. Open Buffet breakfast consists of a variety of hot drinks and juice as well as eggs, rolls/bread, meat, cereal, and fruit.
3. Com = Comfort- Usually means fewer people on the flight.
4. Del = Deluxe- Usually indicates a longer flight with fewer people and maybe other features like a free safari jeep ride.
5. St = Standard- This is the normal flight that every company offers.
6. Com = Comfort
7. St = Standard
8. VIP = Very Important Person- This usually refers to private flights.
9. St = Standard
10. Com = Comfort
A. Slot? and Basket size? There are 2 flights or “slots” each morning. The first is at sunrise and the second is an hour later. The maximum is 100 balloons in the air so the companies have been given a certain number of “slots” they can use. The numbers given represent the number of balloons they get for the first and second slot respectively.
Smaller basket capacity means more room and a better viewing position for each passenger.
B. Length of flight and price? The companies cannot guarantee the length. 60 minutes usually means between 50 and 70 minutes. I have been a number of times, and we always went over the time. Also, the quoted price may not be up to date as the companies do not inform me when they change their prices. You will need to check with their website to verify the price. And most of the companies offer a cash discount.
C. Breakfast? Some say a simple breakfast is better since the balloons have no bathroom. I have done it twice with companies that offered open buffet breakfast and everyone ate and nobody had problems in the balloon. Personally I preferred the bigger breakfast but I know not everyone does. You will be done in time to still enjoy your hotel breakfast. Also, some of the companies offer breakfast in their own place and some serve it at the take off point. They say guests want to see the whole process. I personally like being in a breakfast room and going to watch the last part of the inflation process. If you want to see more of the process, you should choose a company who serves breakfast near the balloon. Be aware of the morning temperatures when you are making this decision.
D. Branded vans? This helps when a few vans show up to your hotel and you are trying to figure out which one is yours. I have heard of people getting in the wrong van. Make sure you know which company you are going with.
E. Balloon envelope material? Different balloon manufacturers have different names for similar materials. In this post I have used the name Hyperlast to refer to a strong, safe coated nylon material that most of the balloon companies use. Cameron calls it Hyperlast, Lindstrand calls it Hyperlife, Ultramagic goes with Ultralast, and Kubicek uses a polyester based fabric that is different from Hyperlast but they claim just as good, if not better. I have no idea how to verify their claims except to say that they are not rated as high as the other companies among those with whom I spoke.
