Have you ever taken a bath together as a family?

Have you ever slid around with your kids on a warm marble slab while throwing soap suds at each other?

If not, then the historical Turkish hamam in the city of Gülşehir is the place for you.

Built in 1777 this classic Ottoman Turkish bath was the first of a complex of buildings (külliyeler) built in the then-called city of Arabsun. Karavezir Seyyid Mehmet Paşa, the Grand Vizier to Sultan Abdulhamid I was born in this insignificant town on the Kızılırmak River, which then became a central ilçe (similar to a county seat) of the region. In addition to the hamam the central mosque was constructed, along with a library, school, 6 fountains and a madrasa for theological enlightenment.

I was charmed immediately by the quaintness of this Turkish bath located at the end of the downtown area, just past and around the corner from the massive Karavezir Mosque. The proprietor Ali Tüfekçi and his son Şükrü are warm and friendly, which made me immediately think of bringing my family to this hamam. Also, the diminutive size lends itself beautifully to private parties, such as families, who can enjoy the bath all to themselves. Ali Bey even offered to grill meat (not provided) on their barbecue while you enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of the Turkish bath, which can then culminate in a nice picnic.

HOURS OF OPERATION

07:00-23:00 – 7 days a week
Women-only hours on Saturdays from 10:00-15:00

There are only male tellaks (masseurs), even for the women-only hours.
No appointments are necessary for individuals, but if you want to arrange a smaller party, you can call Ali at: 0384.411.4745.
Ali’s English is limited so you might want a Turkish speaker to call and set up the appointment.

PRICES
The entrance fee is 10 TL, with both the kese (scrub down) and bubble massage each being 5 TL a piece, thus, totaling 20 TL for the entire Turkish hamam experience.

Even though Gülşehir is not one of the major stops on an organized tour of Cappadocia, this town and its environs is one of the great finds in the region. The congeniality and hospitality of Ali Bey and others that I met during my day in Gülşehir was outstanding, and I sense that they too feel as though they have much to offer tourists coming to Cappadocia.
